Second Workshop in Saint Lucia and appearance on local TV

22nd June 2010

As part of the Technical Assistance to the Sustainable Development and Environment Section of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Environment on the implementation of Saint Lucia’s National Energy Policy (NEP), PPA Energy conducted a second consultation workshop on the 26th of May 2010 in Castries.

Four team members facilitated this consultation workshop, which formed part of a short term energy awareness campaign focusing on energy efficiency and energy conservation technologies and applications suitable for Saint Lucia.

After an introduction by Peter Beard, the Team Leader, Marie Molinier a PPA Energy team member made a presentation on practical options and energy implementation strategies covering renewable energy, energy conservation in buildings and energy efficient transport.  Peter then reviewed of the Electricity Supply Act and the key issues that need to be addressed in the implementation of stated objectives of the NEP to establish Saint Lucia as a “Sustainable Energy Demonstration Country”.  Peter’s next presentation covered proposals for the regulation of the electricity sector including provision for the implementation of ECERA, a regional electricity regulation agency.  There then followed a presentation on a proposed long term public energy awareness and education strategy; this presentation was made by Sylvia Beamish an associate of AETS of France, our partner on this project.  This was followed by a presentation from Herbert Samuel, a PPA Energy associate, on the short term energy awareness campaign that the project team is implementing.  The closing remarks were made by Neranda Maurice, the SDE Officer in charge of the project.

More than 25 stakeholders participated in this consultation workshop, and participate in lively and passionate debates on energy regulation, and energy saving strategies.

Following the workshop, Peter Beard gave an interview to a local television news programme; which raised the profile of this energy conservation and efficiency project.

This project is funded by the European Union.
