NEPAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND ACCESS II PROJECT
26th October 2011From June 2011, PPA Energy has provided the Team Leader for the Asian Development Bank Project Preparatory Technical Assistance Project that assessed the current technical and commercial situation of the Nepal Electricity Authority, defined the scope, costs and work plan to support a proposed loan to strengthen and expand the Nepal electricity system and to provide institutional strengthening through capacity building for local staff. This assignment has been performed by an international team of experts including an economist, financial specialist, environmental specialist, supported by local consultants covering the environmental, social and gender aspects.
Nepal has experienced a high rate of electricity demand growth over the past decade, where demand has outgrown both generation and transmission capacity, resulting in load shedding which is having a major impact on Nepal’s economy. The Government of Nepal has encouraged private development of Nepal’s vast hydropower resources to help overcome the generation shortfall and to provide the opportunity to export energy to neighbouring countries. As a consequence, many large hydropower projects are being developed throughout Nepal but currently there is not adequate transmission capacity to meet the increase in generation. The Project is being developed to construct transmission from new hydro developments in central Nepal to the main load centre, Kathmandu and to also expand the capacity of existing transmission and distribution systems. In addition, three small hydropower plants will be rehabilitated under the project.
